Predicates of personal taste and normative meaning

چکیده
Abstract The main aim of the paper is to reject idea that predicates personal taste express normative meanings. According a recent theory proposed by Daniel Gutzmann, both truth-conditional content and use-conditional content, latter being normative. purported normativity supposed consist in when producing utterances containing such predicates, their speakers suggest how other people ought experience objects under discussion. provides bunch evidence show there are cannot be used normatively this sense. In particular, it claimed one can make an utterance then add related piece information without doing anything redundant; also deny generating any contradiction or infelicity. At same time, admitted situations which do communicate something taste. We thus need explanation cope with cases. Although does not offer one, some reasons effect correct has pragmatic rather than semantic.

Expressive Content and Predicates of Personal Taste
It is not straightforwardly clear how we might provide truth conditions for sentences containing predicates of personal taste (henceforth PoPTs), e.g. fun. According to Lasersohn (2005) a semantic theory of PoPTs must account for the intuition that each of the speakers in (1) is expressing a true statement, and yet B is directly contradicting A. This is known as the problem of faultless disagre...
متن کاملJudge dependence , epistemic modals , and predicates of personal taste
Predicates of personal taste (fun, tasty) and epistemic modals (might, must) share a similar analytical difficulty in determining whose taste or knowledge is being expressed. Accordingly, they have parallel behavior in attitude reports and in a certain kind of disagreement. On the other hand, they differ in how freely they can be linked to a contextually salient individual, with epistemic modal...
متن کاملContext Dependence , Disagreement , and Predicates of Personal Taste
This paper argues that truth values of sentences containing predicates of ‘‘personal taste’’ such as fun or tasty must be relativized to individuals. This relativization is of truth value only, and does not involve a relativization of semantic content: If you say roller coasters are fun, and I say they are not, I am negating the same content which you assert, and directly contradicting you. Non...
متن کاملA Judge-Free Semantics for Predicates of Personal Taste
We offer a new account of the semantics of predicates of personal taste (PPTs) like tasty and fun which, unlike recent proposals (Lasersohn 2005; Stephenson 2007a, 2007b), does not appeal to a judge parameter as a component of the evaluation index. We identify empirical shortcomings of previous proposals, arguing that PPTs have a first-person-oriented meaning component even in cases that seem t...
